It is a white rhombohedral crystal or powder with a relative density of 1.735 and a melting point of approximately 287℃. It is easily soluble in solvents such as water, ethanol, and acetone. Its aqueous solution is neutral. When it comes into contact with ferric salts, it forms blood-red iron thiocyanate. It does not react with ferrous salts. When combined with concentrated sulfuric acid, it produces yellow sodium thiocyanate sulfate. When interacting with cobalt salts, it forms dark blue cobalt thiocyanate. When reacting with silver salts or copper salts, it produces white silver thiocyanate or black copper thiocyanate precipitate. It is prone to deliquescence in the air.
It is used as a concrete additive for construction, a cement grinding aid, a solvent for acrylonitrile fiber spinning, a chemical analysis reagent, a processing agent for color film, a defoliant for certain plants, and a weed killer for airport roads. It is also used as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, intermediates for pesticide herbicides and insecticides, mineral processing agents, printing and dyeing, rubber processing, black nickel plating, and the manufacture of artificial mustard oil.
